A spine surgery is usually used to treat patients suffering from a spinal disc, a very painful condition caused by the release of the spinal fluids in the surrounding areas via tears in the spine. The problem can be easily cured at various Orthopaedic specialist hospitals in India. The doctors and surgeons in India used machines and equipment based on latest technology and use techniques that are at par with International standards. Orthopaedic treatment hospitals in India have their own specialised laboratories where all the tests and screenings are conducted. They also offer services like physiotherapy that is a must after undergoing a spine surgery.
Spine surgeries are mostly carried out in four different ways i.e. Discectomy (which involves the surgical removal of all the parts of the disc), Foraminotomy (which involves the widening of the area from where the nerve roots leave the spinal column), Laminectomy (it involves the surgical removal of the lamina) ana Spinal fusion (it involves the surgical fusion of two bones in the back in order to treat the various problems of the spine). Spine surgeries are highly effective in treating discs and instantly relieving the patient of chronic back pain but the surgery alone cannot prove to be as helpful and needs to be followed up by proper therapies and changes in our daily lifestyle. The time, taken for recovery usually depends upon the age of the patient, the type of surgery and the adversity of the problem that was treated.
After the surgery has been performed, the patient needs to stay in the hospital for a week or so till the incision wound has healed completely.
Even after the patient is discharged, he/she may be required to take complete bed rest.
There may even be the need of using a wheelchair to move around for some time following the surgery.
Initially, the patient may feel pain, numbness or weakness, but there’s nothing to worry about as the symptoms are temporary and fade away with time.
It usually takes about 3 to 4 month for a patient to heal completely. Normal physical activities can be restored after this.
In case of spinal fusion, younger patients can go back to their normal lifestyle within 3 to 4 weeks, whereas, in case of elderly people, it may take as long as 4 months as their bones take a longer time to heal.
The patient needs to make sure that the wound is properly cleaned, sanitized and covered. It should not be allowed to come in contact with dust and impurities as these can lead to infection which can give rise to new complications.
In case the wound is red, swollen or draining excess fluid, it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately.
In case you are planning to take a shower, consult your doctor first, such that he makes sure that you are ready for it. It is important to keep the wound dry for the first few days after the surgery, hence taking a bath is out of the option. You might also require some to help you while taking a bath. Use a plastic wrap to avoid the water from coming in contact with the wound.
It is advisable not to smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products after the surgery as these slow down the healing process.
The patient should avoid sitting in one place for more than half an hour. Try to maintain a proper posture while sleeping and avoid indulging in sexual activities for some time. Avoid bending and carrying heavy objects as these may put a lot of strain on your back muscles.
Exercising is a very important part of the process of recovery.
You can take short walks for 10 to 15 minutes for the first few weeks and increase the time and pace gradually. You may use the stairs once or twice a week.
Swimming, running and cycling should be avoided unless recommended by your doctor.
Avoid driving a car for the first few weeks following the surgery. Even if you are sitting on the passenger seat, do not travel for more than 30 minutes at a stretch.
